L2 A (3rd team) vs Durbanville A: 0 – 2 loss

L2 B (4th team) vs Conberg: 5 – 1 win
With the warm African sun blazing out of the bright blue sky, the chilling polar air reminded us it’s till winter! Ok that and the factwe are still playing outdoor hockey! For some unknown reason we were shortof time to warm up (which generally does not take long for us oldies), so when we took the park, were somewhat unsettled. The Conberg goal-box was not protectedby an ‘oros’ man, yet it took us a good 10 minutes to put the first ball in the box. Genee ‘Post-it’ Clarke (playing left wing) only realized there was no goalie, when the first goal was scored. The first and second goal werereplica’s with Careen ‘Cracker’ Mc Kinon feeding Nadya ‘Lightning’ Buchanan, who treated the Conberg players as anthills and ran circles round them beforegently pushing the ball over the line. Their goalie arrived and we hit abit of a drought. Dal’e-lama’ Dunbar scored our 3rd, when she got the onlytouch from a ‘pin-ball’ game in the circle. Mid-way through the second half Nadya ‘Hat-trick’ Buchanan casually scored her third. Kathy ‘Road Runner’ Smith, celebrated like she had just scored the winning goal in some major cupfinal. Somewhere between our 4th and 5th goal we allowed Conberg to havean open shot at a diving Mel ‘Michelin’ Grant. All in all a great game by the masters clan. Next, the trek to Paarl, for hopefully another win but certainly an afternoon of enjoyment and great hockey.

M2 A (4th team) vs Central: 1 – 7 loss
Central caused all sorts of trouble over having to play us at our home ground for the second time this season due to a mistake in the fixtures. We declined changing the fixture to play at Vygies because of one of our guys reffing M3’s game, which was before ours at Hartleyvale, and one of M3’s guys due to ref ours. Despite tehunion ruling in our favour, Central decided to appeal and it looked like the game was going to be delayed. So we agreed to play at Vygies with a half an hour delay so the player and ref could get to the field. After all, who besides Central actually cares if you play at Vygies or Hartleyvale? // That drama over, we still started the game 10 min late because of the Central keeper arriving late and taking his time to kit up. Not sure why we actually waited for him… The game started well for us and we put in the first goal. But after the first 15 min things started going downhill and in teh second half they went off the cliff. Central were clearly fitter than us and our lack of subs was a major problem. Our links were tired and didn’t get back quick enough, and our defence was regularly overwhelmed. // A very disappointing result given that we drew against them last time when we were far down on the log and they were high up on it. Our thanks to Luke for filling in and Andrew van Haght for reffing.

M2 B (5th team) vs Van der Stell: 1 – 3 loss
I think that after beating the log leaders last weekend a bit of over confidence crept into our side and Van der Stell put us right back down by beating us 3-1. Nothing went our way, we missed plenty of open goals, hitting the post twice, had about 15 short corners without converting 1, plenty of missed tackles and wayward passes, they took their few chances they had and made us pay for it. Best we forget the game and concentrate on our last 2 games to try and maintain 2nd spot on the log.

M3 (6th team) vs VOB: 2 – 6 loss

M4 (7th team) vs Fish Hoek: 2 – 1 win

M5 A (8th team) vs Durbanville B: 0 – 1 loss
Shocking field, terrible opposition, a poor result, but a beautiful day in the boerewors belt! In a game we hold sway for most of the match, we just failed to take our chances, conceded 1 in the second half, and that’s how it ended. Yet another match we’ve ended as the losing side that we should have won, think that’s the 4th this season! We just need to be more clinical in front of goal, then our position in the league would have been closer to top 4 rather than 8th… Two matches left to go, a midweek fixture and our final match at home this Sat… then we can look forward to summer!
