LADIES

LTC (2nd team) vs WPCC A: 1 – 5 loss
It was a horrible, horrible, horrible game.. The goats outran us with their sickly legs.. they outplayed us.. and we lost 5-1.. Not a very nice game to watch & we are all glad its over.

L2 A (3rd team) vs Conberg: 2 – 0 win
It was hot, astro was hard and dry and as it stood, Con Berg lies just below us in the league. Therefore before any play began we knew we had to win and WIN with a BONUS point. I’m not sure if the thought of that rattled us a bit but our game throughout wasn’t consistent. We had great highlights throughout but would have been a super game if we held it together a bit more. We got two great goals in in the second half. I think with more determination, hard practice and faith in each other, we soon will be a team to be reckoned with. Goals scored by Mel and Jules.

L2 B (4th team) vs Central: 6 – 0 win
After our disappointing loss against Central in the 1st round, the masters took to the field in the blazing sun at Vygies with a point to prove. And boy did we prove it! The play makers made it all look so easy and by the end of the first half we had a solid 3-0 lead. The team cry was “Bonus” – which Nadya “Lightning” Buchanan took to heart, taking a self pass, dodging the sleeping central team and scoring the bonus point goal 11 seconds into the second half. Michelle ”The Legend” Hobens’ instructions for a short corner were then followed to the ‘T’ and surprise, surprise – goal number 5 and Carreen “Goal Hog” Mckinnons’ 4th for the day! Nadya slotted the final nail in the central coffin with her second of the day. A great day at the office for the oldies – bonus points two weeks running. Bring on next week’s challenge!

MEN

M2 A (4th team) vs Van der Stel: 1 – 2 loss
We arrived at the Stellenbosch astro only to find… no parking. Turns out that there was a Greys vs Paul Roos rugby match on. So for many of us our warm-up was the long walk up the road! We dominated the first half of the game but just didn’t use our opportunities. We ended the first half rather hot (who would’ve thought it was winter, given the heat out there that day) and tied 1 – 1. The second half did not go as well for us, but we managed to hold them off for the most part. Then a hit across goal at chest height was tapped at goals, but stopped by yours truly. Sadly, I did so with my hand (pure reflex: it was coming just past my chest). (Luckily I was given only a green: the ref saw that I didn’t do it on purpose.) And so they got a p-flick and went up by one, which was how the game ended. Afterwards, Mike managed to convince the ref that he made the wrong call: the hit at goal was dangerous because I was in front of the player. Of little consolation to us though!

M2 B (5th team) vs WPCC: 5 – 1 win
Log leaders WPCC haven’t lost a game in years and after we beat them 5-1 they were in a state of shock. Every one of us put in 100% and couldn’t do anything wrong which put them on the back foot from start to finish, the best hockey our team has played all year and the 5-1 win was well deserved, well done guys.

M4 (7th team) vs Conberg: 1 – 2 loss
The great day rolled around and the mighty dodo’s arrived. The arena was not so much undulating but jaggered. The pitch being blamed for dangerously lifting the ball time and time again, this would have been true if the trajectory of the ball was horizontal from the moment of impact, but enough science for now. The highlight of the game was one Andrew J Stone completing a tackle that any professional rugby player would be proud of, unfortunately the tackle was made and the smallest of our opposition walked off crying. The Springboks had a great win, the Dodo’s came second. Next game Monday 3 a.m. Nelson Mandela Bay Astro turf, ROAD TRIP!
