LADIES

LGC (1st team) vs Bellville: 2 – 3 loss
On a hot Saturday afternoon, we travelled through to Bellville for what we knew would be a tough encounter. We went 1-0 down within the first 10 minutes and it took us 20 minutes into the game before we started to play our kind of hockey and look threatening. Bellville scored again before half time, but Reyhana Henry got one back for us before the break. 2-1 at half time. After a much needed “kak on” session from our coach at half time, we aimed to be much better in the 2nd half. Unfortunately, we gave away possession far too often and therefore struggled to gain any kind of momentum in the game. Again, only in the last 15 minutes of the game, did we wake up and start to attack the Bellville goal. We equalised at 2-2 with about 10 minutes left with a diving deflection goal from Kate Bester. Sadly, Bellville were brutal on the counter attack and shortly after our equaliser, they took the lead again with what was the winning goal. Definitely not our best performance and it was agreed that we didn’t deserve to win. Nevertheless, we march onwards and look forward to the next game.

LTC (2nd team) vs Constantiaberg: 0 – 3 loss
The TC ladies took on Constantiaberg in anticipation of a much desired win. It was a tight game to start, with them putting pressure early on. Our defence held well and we had attacking opportunities. Unfortunately, some bad marking led to two relatively easy goals before the break. Still, we applied pressure and occupied their circle for a lot of the second half, but couldn’t convert. We held them defensively, determined not to let another goal in, but they sneaked one past us, making the final score 3 0. Thanks very much to Matt le Grange for reffing!

L2 A (3rd team) vs Stellenbosch: 1 – 6 loss
We went, they divided and conquered! The first 20 minutes saw us holding them, executing snappy passes and putting our strikers in their circle at least four times…. and then, it all came apart at the seams. Only an out-of-time corner struck sweetly by Jerri saw us gather our tattered pride.

L2 A (3rd team) vs Durbanville: 1 – 1 draw
Thoroughly ticked off at our losing streak, the troops, bolstered a bit with Heike and Nicky took to our home turf with grit and determination. No quarter was given by either side with hard battles fought up the mid and out-field. Some aggressive tackling finally saw us getting the edge over them and with Nicky perfectly positioned on the left post, she slotted a mid-air flying ball straight behind a still protesting goalie. Way to go Nicky smokin’ sticks girl! They evened out the scores with an unlucky ball that got stuck under Charne’s kicker. Howls of protest from the very vocal (and prozac ready) bench went unheaded, other than the opposing ump giving us some baleful stares and sharp cautioning. They pushed hard for the last couple of minutes but we held our lines and kept the score at a respectable 1 1 draw. This was celebrated as a victory as Durbanville are third on the log to our eighth. Go girls!

L2 B (4th team) (Masters) vs Durbanville: 1 – 1 draw
Another great result! With Debbie away frolicking with the Polar Bears in the Artic, the Penguins came marching in on the icy wind that was blowing at Hartleyvale. The game was played at a furious pace. Cindy “Super-sub” Dyamond managed to do the job of stepping into Debbie’s shoes at right half. Durbanville scored first in the middle of the first half thanks to a little touch by the super-sub herself! Ade “BEE” May’s overheads were invaluable. The whole team ran hard and did their best to play to our structure and game plan. Mel “Michelin” Grant had an absolute blinder and saved our bacon with some spectacular diving that had the spectators “oohing and aaahing”. Careen “Cracker” Mckinnon again proved her worth, fighting relentlessly for the ball in our attacking circle, before passing it to Nadya to put away. Genee “No-swishing” Clarke was very unlucky not to add to the tally in the second half. Interestingly, in terms of possession, the first half belonged to Pinelands who wasted opportunities, the second half belonged to Durbanville who were denied by Michelin. So a great result against second on the log. Well done, ladies! Stellies next game…

L4 (5th team) vs Pioneers: 1 – 0 win
After making the great trek out to Stellenbosch the L4’s were glad to come away with a win although frustrated it was not by more. The forwards had a great game with some incredible passing. The team was also exceptionally supportive and communication was great even without a coach screaming from the sidelines. We managed to force a number of penalty corners, giving Bergie the opportunity to smash one into the back of the goals within the first 10 mintues. Tammy Zeeman was then “robbed” of her goal as the umpire reversed her decision moments after awarding the point. After much deliberaiton our umpire could not sway her weak yet very stubborn argument and the L4s had to take the high road and continue playing despite being tripped, kicked and sworn at. The improvement in our game (and fitness) was visible as we were streaks ahead of a side we had really battled with in the first half of the season.

L5 (6th team) vs Mutual CPUT: 3 – 3 draw
I missed the first half of the game, unfortunately, having a team talk with my L4 side; but Priscilla tells me it was not great hockey having concede two flicks (one of which was saved) and the score at half time being 2 0 down (flick and corner). Soon after half time we went 3 0 down. In the heat of the day the ladies were feeling the heat on the field from the opposition as well. With two siubs on the bench and a host of subs taking placing as the half progressed, the girls fought their way back into the game. At 3 2 down with 5 minutes to go panic set in for the opposition who started to see themselves grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory. Panic lead to fear as we scored from a shorty to level the scores with 3 mins to play. They pulled their strikers off and put on defensive midfielders but that wasn’t enough to repress the resurgent 5ths who pushed for a winner. Unfortunately time was not on their side, but I am proud of my girls and their courage on the field. Special mention to Caryn Schubert who I felt never gave an inch on the field and whose tenacity inspired the other girls to step up to the plate. Liza Vorster scored the pressure shorty for the draw and Cindy Dyamond kept the scoreline to something we could chase down. But all the girls played much better in the second half and I hope they don’t take a full half to get into their game next time!

MGC (1st team) vs UCT A: 3 – 4 loss

MGC (1st team) vs Stellenbosch: 0 – 5 loss

MTC A (2nd team) vs UCT: UCT conceded (no show)

MTC A (2nd team) vs Central A: 0 – 5 loss

MTC B (3rd team) vs Bellville: 3 – 1 win
We started out trying to keep the match going at a high tempo. Our passing was not as accurate as it could be and we over elaborated at times when simple hockey would have been far better. In the second half we managed to assert ourselves much better through playing a slower, more accurate passing game with some deft touches in tight areas and some fantastic movement of the ball around the back. We eventually walked away 3 1 winners and I am happy with how the boys responded to needing to change our tactics.

M2 A (4th team) vs Mutual CPUT: 2 – 6 loss

M2 B (5th team) vs UCT B: 3 – 2 win

M3 (6th team) vs Central: 1 – 0 win
How sweet this victory was! With us sitting sixth in the log and Central first, we all knew this was going to be a tough game. After super-sub Maccers (from the Dodos) put one in the back of the Central net, things started getting tense and Central started getting vocal. But Drew, forced against his will to ref for us, put his foot down, threatening to green card the next eprson from either team who said anything to him. Things calmed down after the mid-game break and the second half was played in a good spirit. Central ran at us incredibly hard, but we managed to keep a clean sheet, despite being on a back foot for the majority of the half. What makes this win even sweeter is that Central have lost only two games so far both to us!

M4 (7th team) (Mighty Dodo’s) vs Somerset West: 1 – 3 loss
Definitely a home ground advantage to Somerset West they knew how to handle the rubbish field! The opening goal was an unfortunate deflection by one of our defenders through the Peela’s legs. Somerset West followed up with a pretty good field goal to put them up by two at the end of the first half. In the second half, Trevor managed to nick the ball in the circle and the Somerset keeper, listening to a shout from one of his players, kindly left the ball and allowed the goal. Unfortunately, while we just couldn’t sink another one, Somerset West managed to do so. Indy’s theory on why we didn’t win: though almost everyone had been drinking before the game, we evidently just weren’t pissed enough! Dodo of the Day: Porters.

M5 (8th team) vs Central: 2 – 2 draw
The disappointment of drawing after the final whistle to a short corner leaves me commentless.

M6 (9th team) vs Mutual CPUT: 0 – 0 draw

Masters A vs WPCC T: 2 – 2 draw
After being down twice to WPCC T during the game on Saturday, we did well to claw our way back to a draw with some very neat passing hockey at times. An enjoyable game played in a good spirit.
